The Major T-Shirt
The Major T-Shirt
A true piece of United history, "Major" was a St Bernard owned by Newton Heath captain Harry Stafford at the turn of the twentieth century. He became part-mascot, part-fundraiser for the struggling club; on matchdays, Major reportedly carried a collection box to help raise money while Newton Heath were in serious financial trouble. His big moment came after a 1901 fundraising bazaar, when he went missing and ended up in the orbit of local brewer John Henry Davies. That chance connection helped bring Davies into contact with Stafford and Newton Heath, and Davies then joined other investors in putting money into the club, rescuing it from possible collapse. Therefore, it can be said that everything that Manchester United became can be traced back directly to "The Major" - here pictured wearing a very retro red and white United shirt.
